About the Item

British studio pottery small vase by Bernard Rooke. Featuring leaves and bird decoration. Inscribed BR. Circa 1970. In very good condition, with no damage. Bernard Rooke studied painting and lithography at Ipswich School of Art between 1955 and 1959. He continued his studies at Goldsmiths College, London and St Mary’s Twickenham; it was here where he discovered his interest in ceramics. leaving to establish his workshop in Forest Hill, South London. He shared the studio with the ceramicist Alan Wallwork. New and progressive designs were growing in popularity in London and Rooke focussed his work creating sculptural ceramics with themes of nature, he also supplemented the income from the studio by lecturing at London University and at Goldsmiths’ College. In 1963, Rooke moved his pottery to larger premises in Greenwich, however growth continually demanded more space and so he moved again to a huge mill building in Swilland, near Ipswich in 1967. The old mill needed renovation at the same time as Rooke had a young family; this meant that a commercial endeavour from his ceramic work was necessary. Rooke began to acquire significant commissions for table lamps and large ceramic murals which incorporated lighting. During the 1970’s Rooke’s wife Susan opened a gallery in the windmill where they sold Rooke’s work to local and to the Americans from the local military airbase. Rooke’s work gained international success.
