FIRST HALF OF THE 18th CENTURY VERTICAL CASTLES MAJOLICA PLAQUE

About the Item

Beautiful vertically painted majolica plaque, attributable to the famous Castelli factory, located in Abruzzo (Central Italy), dating back to the first half of the 18th century. The plaque depicts a scene inspired by the Gospel of Luke, known as the parable of the prodigal son. In this parable, Jesus tells the story of a man with two sons; although they were in need of nothing, the youngest son asks his father for his share of the inheritance, during his father's lifetime. Having obtained it, he travels to a distant country where he squanders all his wealth by living dissolutely, before deciding to return home, where he will be forgiven by his father. In the painted scene, the prodigal son is depicted as he leaves on horseback, turning to greet his father and brother. In the background, you can see camels and fantastic architecture, including a pyramid. The plaque shows remarkable attention to detail, representing a work of taste and refinement.
