A hand-thrown, well-crafted, piercing green glazed ceramicpitcher by famed Texas-born San Antonio ceramic master Harding Black. A perfect combination of form and function.
Signed and dated (1983) by the Black on the base.
This work has a great feel and heft to them. The deep rich colors are striking.

Harding Black
Harding Black was born on a farm in Nueces County between Ingleside and Aransas Pass and moved with his family to San Antonio in 1916. There, he graduated from Brackenridge High School and attended San Antonio Junior College (1929–30). In 1931, Black joined an archaeological expedition to the Big Bend area sponsored by the Witte Memorial Museum. Initially a painter, he was taught by Rudolph Staffel in 1933 to make wheel-thrown pottery and in the same year began to teach children's ceramic classes at the Witte. Between 1937–39, Black directed ceramic installation in a San Antonio reconstruction project sponsored by the National Youth Administration and the Works Progress Administration art program. In 1955, he retired from teaching and devoted his time to ceramics. Black became a well-known ceramist from his research, innovations, and writings in the field.

A fantastic, freeform, large, heavy plate/ charger by American master potter Peter Voulkos who is known for his abstract expressionist ceramic pottery pieces and sculptures. Very unique and scarce work with rare use of color. Very hard to come by. One of our personal favorites along with the Chawan tea bowl.
Signed on base and dated (1961) by Voulkos. This was made during one of his most magical and experimental phases.

Voulkos is widely considered to be the most important and impactful ceramist of the modern era. He won the Rodin Museum Prize at the first Paris Biennale in 1959 and was the winner of a Guggenheim fellowship in 1984. Voulkos received the College Art Association’s Distinguished Artist Award for Lifetime Achievement in 1997. He was made an honorary member of the American Academy and Institute of Arts and Letters in 2001. He also received six honorary
doctorate degrees as well as three National Endowment for the Arts awards.
