This is an unusual game of marble solitaire from the 19th century Victorian period with an old carved bread board converted to a solitaire game board with 32 early clay and stone marbles. This board was originally a Victorian bread board, probably made of sycamore, with hand carved decorative detail to its outer edge including the word "bread". At some point in its history it has been converted to a solitaire game board. This is a novel, unusual and somewhat quirky use for the board but it works very well and is definitely different. The board has 32 spaced holes with an additional one in the centre and the old bread crumb gallery to the outer perimeter holds the marbles when they have been "jumped" This board has a larger diameter than normal and has a very good natural color. It comes complete with a full set of 32 early hand-made playing marbles. Early marbles are very collectable in their own right and the marbles in this set are nominally 0.63 inches in diameter. They are made from a mixture of ceramic materials and colours; stone, clay (earthenware) and pottery. Popular in the court of Louis the XIV, the game was supposedly invented by a nobleman incarcerated in the Bastille in France during the 17th century and was popular in the court of Louis XIV. It is a challenging game for the fan of strategy and skill and became one of the more popular games of the last few hundred years. To play, place 32 marbles with one hole left unoccupied in the middle of the board. The objective is simply to remove all but one of the marbles by jumping one marble over another, similar to the game of Draughts. The marble jumped is removed to the gallery around the side of the board. We date this item to circa 1870 with some of the marbles probably earlier in the 19th century.

Condition:
Wear consistent with age and use. The bread board has many light scratches and knife cut marks as expected from previous use. The marbles are hand-made and therefore not exactly spherical and all have variable wear from use, with some nibbles and marks. Please see images.
