About the Item

Small cigar case galuchat-coated teak wood with ebony side profiles, 1970s manufacture. Wooden teak base masterfully veneered in Galuchat, pedigree leather light blue tint with glossy finish and ebony side profiles, the center of the lid highlights the backbone of the race, teak wood interior. Very Good Condition. Measures 18x13x4.5 cm - inches7.1x5.2x1.8. The race is a fish from the warm seas with a cartilaginous coat, was used in ancient times; the earliest uses of skate skin date back to ancient Asian civilizations that used this raw hide to decorate the handles and scabbards of swords. However, it was in Europe that, during the 1700s, Jean Claude Galuchat, an artisan active at the court of Versailles, succeeded in developing a technique to make the skin of this fish shiny and colorful: thus the Galuchat tanned skate was born. Since then it was used for furniture, the production of small precious objects, and even building decoration. Napoleon III had an entire room wallpapered with rawhide commissioned. Today it is used, mainly, for making clothing accessories. Tanneries capable of processing this leather, which occupies, by now, a privileged position in the luxury firmament are very few and in most cases located between France and Italy.
