"The Binding of Issac" An Italian 17th century Polychrome Sculpture

About the Item

A masterful example of religious storytelling rendered in sculptural form, this Italian 17th century polychrome relief sculpture depicts the powerful biblical scene of The Binding of Isaac (Akedat Yitzhak) with emotional intensity and exceptional detail. At the center of the composition stands Abraham, poised in dramatic motion, his right arm raised to perform the fateful act—yet held firmly back by a descending angel, who bursts forth from a cluster of clouds in a vividly painted blue sky. The angel, youthful and serene, is garbed in a soft pink tunic with golden wings outstretched, arresting Abraham’s hand at the final moment. Abraham wears a green tunic, brown boots, and a sweeping brown cape that curls in motion, enhancing the scene's drama and energy. Beneath them lies the figure of Isaac, a youthful boy, bound and resting atop a wooden altar, which is constructed in a log-cabin style, richly painted in earthy browns. The altar itself sits upon a rocky mountainside, complete with foliage, trees, and shrubs, into which is nestled a ram entangled in the brush—a faithful representation of the ram provided by God as a substitute sacrifice. The sculptural elements are boldly polychromed, with vibrant and harmonious coloration that breathes life into every feature—from the windswept drapery to the textures of the naturalistic landscape. The composition is set within a gilded frame, bordered with a gold-painted molding and mounted on a wooden base embellished with four grand scrolling gilt ornaments at each corner. The entire framework complements and elevates the devotional and artistic impact of the scene. An emotionally powerful and visually rich devotional object, this Italian sculpture captures one of the most pivotal moments of biblical sacrifice with elegance, tension, and deeply expressive craftsmanship.

Late 17th/Early 18th Century Polychrome Tobacconist Figure Sign Folk Art Carving
Located in Lowestoft, GB
A large carved and polychrome painted tobacconist's figure almost certainly 17th or early 18th century For a related example see Edward H. Pinto, Treen and other Wooden Bygones, Bell and Hyman, London 1969. Page 412, plate 436. Originally this may well have been a tobacconist's shop window figure. For a similar, but slightly earlier unpainted example, see Sotheby's, The W. J. Shepherd collection of treen, 30th November 1983, Lot 393, illustrated in Pinto "Wooden Bygones of Smoking and Snuff Taking", plate 1. Carved wooden figures, often painted, were placed outside tobacconist's shops as signs from the 17th century onwards. The earliest of these figures is the 'black boy' or 'blackamoor'. 'At the sign of the black boy' or 'at the sign of the blackamoor' was a popular address for tobacconists since the early 17th century. The 17th century figures...
