Early 20th Century African American Crazy Quilt
Located in Barrington, IL
This extraordinary African American crazy quilt, hand-pieced and embroidered in the early 1900s, is a vivid expression of creativity, resilience, and cultural storytelling. Composed of 25 distinct blocks arranged in a 5x5 grid, each approximately 13 inches square, the quilt features an array of rich wool fabrics in hues of red, brown, gray, black, navy, and pale green—cut into dynamic rectangular and trapezoidal shapes. Every piece is meticulously hand-appliquéd and accented with elegant feather stitch embroidery, lending intricate detail and texture to the overall composition. A soft gray flannel border, 5 inches wide, frames the quilt, while the reverse is backed with warm gray cotton flannel, adding both comfort and contrast. More than just a textile, this quilt is a historical artifact—one that reflects the ingenuity and artistry of African American makers during a pivotal era in American history. Early African American quilts from the 19th and early 20th centuries have become highly sought after for their rarity, authenticity, and profound cultural significance. Face coverings were worn for centuries by the women of various nomadic tribal groups of North Africa and the Middle East. In the western desert of Egypt, Berber women living in Bedouin societies sometimes wear masks or veils called niqab. The veils serve multiple functions, including protecting the women’s face from sun damage, filtering dust from the air, displaying adornment, and demonstrating wealth or status. The niqab worn by Bedouin women on special occasions are sometimes elaborately decorated with coins and beads, like this one. Such masks are not for everyday use; they would be too hot and heavy. They are worn during special events, such as weddings and feasts. Face veil: 12" W x 19" L, circa 1915-1930. Last pictures are references from the book: "Traditional Palestinian Embroidery...

19th Century American Crazy Quilt with Red Stars
Located in Barrington, IL
Hand pieced and hand stitched and hand tied American crazy quilt circa the late 1800s. Each piece in the quilt is individually hand cut and hand tied. It has herringbone embroidered seams on a flannel cotton backing. The beautiful quilt was found in the New England region, possibly having been made in Pennsylvania in the late 19th century. The pieces have bright colors including brilliant red stars, gray, blue, and many others which results in a vibrant hand crafted piece of late 19th century art that can be used as a bed cover or wall art. Crazy quilts: These quilts were made up of randomly sewn, abstract shapes, and were often embroidered with fancy stitches and motifs. The name "crazy" comes from the irregular shapes and sizes of the patches, which gave the quilt a broken pottery appearance. Crazy quilts were typically made with three layers, but were usually bound and tied to a backing instead of quilted. They were often used as decorative throws instead of bed coverings. Vintage Pennsylvania Amish "Lemoyne Star" Hand-Stitched Cotton Quilt
Located in Barrington, IL
Beautifully hand-crafted American Amish pieced cotton quilt in a “Lemoyne Star” pattern from Lancaster County, Pennsylvania circa the mid 1900s. The prominent colors in the quilt are black and purple with individual pieces of the star pattern in green and purple hand-cut and hand-stitched. The quilt has very fine hand stitching. The Amish community in Pennsylvania hand craft the quilts for their own use using the material that they had on hand. It is a beautiful example of an upcycling and reuse of material that has utilitarian functions but is also a representation of the art and culture that is woven into it. Please note that some of the colors might be distorted in the photos. Please see the video to clarify. Vintage Uzbek Hand Stitched Silk Quilt in Red, Turquoise, Ivory, Black, Green
Located in Barrington, IL
Beautiful vintage hand-stitched “pieced” silk quilt from Uzbekistan in Central Asia from the mid 1900s. The silk fabric pieces are cut in geometric form and some of them have the design on them. The vibrant colors are red, green, yellow, blue, brown, and black. The quilt resembles the design of the American "Crazy Quilts". The silk quilt would be an ideal piece as a table cover or wall art. The quilt was hand stitched of individual silk pieces in each frame. It is truly a labor of love and dedication. The hand stitched quilts from the 19th and the early 20th centuries have become extremely collectable. One reason is the delicate nature of such items. Because it is so delicate, it would be a wonderful piece to use as a wall art tapestry. Dimensions: 39” x 73” Date of Manufacture: 3rd Quarter of the 1900s Place of Origin: Uzbekistan, Central Asia Material: Silk, Cotton Condition: Good Uzbek Quilts, Vintage Uzbek Silk Quilts, American Applique Quilts, Vintage Pennsylvania Quilts, Antique Applique Quilts...
