Early Wood Ashanti Stool Reclining Figure Supporting Top, Ghana Mid 20th Century

About the Item

The supports for Akan stools take many forms, they can be purely geometric or architectural with simple posts and columns, or, as in this case, figural, with humans or animals supporting the curved seat. Created in the early to mid-20th century, by an anonymous artist of the Akan people of Ghana, probably Ashanti (Asante) or Fanti (Fante). Hardwood with a reddish brown color. . A three pence Ghanaian coin from 1958 is nailed onto the center of top. The stool is most likely older than the coin, which could have been added as a mark of ownership or as a talisman. The figure wears of a sash or belt with fringed end on the left side of his waist. The stool is in good condition, appropriate for its age, use, and medium. A repaired crack on the bottom, other visible repairs, all stable. Scuffs and nicks here and there. Edges rubbed from native use. Field collected in Ghana c. 2002.
