Arts and Crafts Chandeliers and Pendants
ARTS AND CRAFTS STYLE
Emerging in reaction to industrialization and mass production, the Arts and Crafts movement celebrated handcrafted design as a part of daily life. The history of Arts and Crafts furniture has roots in 1860s England with an emphasis on natural motifs and simple flourishes like mosaics and carvings. This work is characterized by plain construction that showcases the hand of the artisan.
The earliest American Arts and Crafts furniture dates back to the start of the 20th century. Designers working in this style in the United States initially looked to ideas put forth by The Craftsman, a magazine published by Wisconsin native Gustav Stickley, a furniture maker and founder of the Craftsman style. Stickley’s furniture was practical and largely free of ornament. His Craftsman style drew on French Art Nouveau as well as the work he encountered on his travels in England. There, the leading designers of the Arts and Crafts movement included William Morris, who revived historical techniques such as embroidery and printed fabrics in his furnishings, and Charles Voysey, whose minimal approach was in contrast to the ornamentation favored in the Victorian era.
American Arts and Crafts work would come to involve a range of influences unified by an elevation of traditional craftsmanship. The furniture was often built from sturdy woods like oak and mahogany while featuring details such as inlaid metal, tooled leather and ceramic tiles. The style in the United States was led by Stickley, whose clean-lined chairs and benches showcased the grain of the wood, and furniture maker Charles Rohlfs, who was informed by international influences like East Asian and French Art Nouveau design.
Hubs in America included several utopian communities such as Rose Valley in Pennsylvania and the Byrdcliffe Arts and Crafts Colony in New York, where craftspeople made furniture that prioritized function over any decoration. Their work would influence designers and architects including Frank Lloyd Wright, who built some of the most elegant and iconic structures in the United States and likewise embraced a thoughtful use of materials in his furniture.

Thanks to its good size, its unique handcarved design and extremely good condition this alabaster chandelier is bound to light up both your days and evenings. What makes this particular alabaster pendant stand out from those that we have seen and sold over the years are both the great colors AND the stylish and all-handcarved grape bunches and wine leafs that are going all around the shade. If you look closely then you will realize that these grapevines are not only the most deeply carved you will have ever seen, they also have been hand-carved with a technique that is called "(we cannot find the name for it yet)". Most of us are unable to handcarve anything half-decent, but the artisan whom created this work-of-art-light-fixture took it to another level alltogether. Not only did he hand-carve beautifully detailed grapevines with grape bunches and wine leafs, he also managed to carve everything around it away whilst still keeping the stunning alabaster shade perfectly round. Using this particular technique of hand-carving on a flat surface would already be very difficult and time consuming, performing it on a round surface is something only the true master carvers would have been able accomplish. Red and pink & black and white are the main colors in this, one of a kind alabaster pendant and with the light off this work of art really is a joy to own and look at. However, with the light switched on this amazing shade comes even more to life and then this chandelier creates an atmosphere that is unlike anything we have ever seen. For this unique light to still be in this amazing condition after more than 100 years is not only an ode to the craftsmanship with which this light was handmade, it also shows how former owners have taken great care. We could shoot many more photos, but you still would not be able to see the true beauty of this alabaster stone shade and you could still not get a good idea of the unique beauty and class that this chandelier radiates. In real life our antiques always have that little bit extra and this stunning pendant truly epitomizes that. You can (again) take our word for it. Have you also noticed the perfect bronze and bross suspension points? They too are in perfect condition. Having been specialised in selling antique light fixtures for over 20 years we love to keep finding amazing fixtures that we have never seen before. This marvelously hand-crafted brass and transparent glass (all beveled) hallway pendant is another one of those rare finds off which we immediately knew we had to have it. There are so many interiors in which this antique pendant will look perfect that we have no doubt it will soon be gracing someones home again. Apart from the open design and the beautiful and durable materials this wonderful pendant light also stands out, because of the many, transparent and beveled glass panels in their perfect brass frames. Finding this rare light was a treat, but for all 36 glass 'windows' to have stood the test of 100 years time without any cracks is just amazing. The outside is a hexagonal design, but the 'base' and 'top' of this pendant are open and decorated with flowing bronze elements that make this work of lighting art even more beautiful. This classy and timeless pendant with its marvelous patina can be used and enjoyed in all sorts of rooms and interiors, but to us this is the ideal entry hall, landing or stairwell pendant...
