Swedish Modern Brass Hanging Lamp with Openwork Element, Sweden 1940s

About the Item

Hanging lights have been used as decorative focal points for rooms since the early 20th century. In Scandinavian mid-century design, where interior lighting is of particular importance, designers managed to master the art of light without disrupting space perception. This model is a classic Swedish piece with a cosy, refined look and some truly unique design features. The style is of the early mid-century, that was in many ways a bridge between Art Déco and Modernism. The upper half of this model has a traditional canopy with a slip ring and a long, straight tube. The lower section however, has a much more unique shape with distinctive elements, including a perforated brass cap holding up the fabric shade. The perforated pattern runs around the shade, and when the lamp is lit creates a subtle light that is evenly distributed through the small crosses. The white fabric shade, with its subtle texture, is the perfect backdrop for the decorative crosses, allowing them to stand out. Thanks to the arrangement of the shade, the light is distributed evenly in all directions when switched on. The combination of materials, shapes, and textures creates this lamp’s classically Swedish Modern design, a clear return to bright simplicity that is in opposition with the later aesthetic of the brighter mass-produced models. The composition of the shapes and clever decorative elements give this ceiling lamp a stylish look that is guaranteed to set the tone of its interior. The modern, sleek design’s lines create a perfect balance between the ornamented features of the early 20th century, and the later phase of mid-century modernism with its more minimal, simplified lines.
