About the Item
A unique and spectacular Louis XVI style chandelier in silvered bronze with rock crystal elements. The chandelier is structured around a central baluster shaft carved from rock crystal, surmounted by a faceted section and flanked by scrolling silvered bronze branches. Ten candle-form lights are arranged in two tiers, each fitted with drip pans and bobeches in cast bronze with foliate detail. The arms extend outward in sweeping scrolls, each supporting pendant crystal drops of varied cuts, including pear, kite, and rosette forms.
The chandelier is further ornamented with suspended prisms, cut crystal rosettes, and rock crystal pendants. The canopy and branching supports are enriched with acanthus leaf decoration in cast bronze, extending upward into an open cage form from which additional crystal drops are hung. A spherical rock crystal finial is mounted beneath the central shaft. The combination of faceted crystal and rock crystal elements provides variation in scale and form across the chandelier.
This chandelier is French in origin, made in the Louis XVI style. The silvered bronze mounts adhere to the neoclassical tradition, featuring acanthus motifs and balanced proportions. Rock crystal was highly prized in France for luxury lighting during the 18th and 19th centuries, often combined with bronze and cut crystal. The production required collaboration between bronze casters, crystal cutters, and lapidary workshops capable of working with rock crystal to create faceted and pendant forms. This example reflects the technical and decorative standards of French chandelier production of the period.
