During the first half of the 20th century, Böhlmarks emerged as one of Scandinavia's foremost companies in luminaire design and production. Founded in 1872 by Daniel Arvid Böhlmark, the company initially focused on importing and selling a range of kerosene and oil lamps along with accompanying accessories. However, driven by rapid growth and an increasing demand for new electrical fixtures, Böhlmarks ventured into manufacturing its own luminaires. In 1894, the company further expanded its capabilities by acquiring the Pukeberg glass factory, which would later become one of Sweden's leading glass manufacturers.
Between the 1920s and 1950s, Böhlmarks played a pivotal role in the Swedish design movement, a period that is now considered a golden age for Swedish design and craftsmanship. It was during these decades that some of the most remarkable luminaires in the country were conceived and brought to life at Böhlmarks.
In 1916, architect Harald Notini joined the ranks of Böhlmarks, assuming the role of artistic director. Notini's arrival marked a turning point for the company, as he steered Böhlmarks towards a modern and innovative direction that would come to define its distinctive range of fixtures and glassware.
Previously, Böhlmark's catalogs predominantly featured traditional chandeliers and fixtures imitating older styles. However, under Notini's visionary guidance, the company began producing groundbreaking designs that were considered avant-garde at the time. Notini's artistic expression spanned a wide spectrum, ranging from the graceful Swedish aesthetics of the 1920s to strictly functionalist luminaires showcased at the 1930 Stockholm exhibition, and finally to the highly cherished Swedish Modern style of the 1940s and 50s. This latter style often incorporated brass fittings adorned with details in glass, wood, and leather.
Harald Elof Notini, the son of renowned sculptor Axel Notini, was not only a trained sculptor and interior architect but also studied at the prestigious Higher Art School, known today as Konstfack. Throughout his illustrious career, Notini remained loyal to Böhlmarks, assuming a prominent role in shaping lighting design in Sweden during the first half of the 20th century.
Notini's dedication to Böhlmarks was unwavering. Even at the age of 79 in 1958, he continued to maintain his office and fulfill numerous responsibilities within the company. A commemorative publication for Böhlmark's 75th anniversary in 1947 highlighted Notini's continued significance as an artistic director, emphasizing his vital contribution to the design of fixtures and household glass. Considering the extensive range of Böhlmark's product catalogs, it can be inferred that Notini led a drawing office comprised of several talented designers.
Today, Böhlmarks luminaires from this era are revered for their timeless beauty and exceptional craftsmanship. They serve as a testament to the enduring legacy of Böhlmarks and Harald Notini, illuminating both the history of Scandinavian design and the creative spirit that drove the company forward throughout its storied existence.
