French 19th Century Wrought Iron Lantern

About the Item

A very decorative and unique French 19th century Wrought Iron lantern. The bottom of the hexagon shaped lantern is elegantly decorated by elongated 'S' scrolls leading to the bottom of the tapered hexagon frame of the lantern with flower like decorations at each angle. The top of the lantern has a wonderful roof line with detailed roof tiles and windows below decorative lighting rods amidst scrolled designs. The lantern is held by the original Wrought Iron link chain measuring 24" Total height with chain: 53"

This beautiful six window lantern is centered around the bottom finial of a spiraling Wrought Iron ring. A most impressive and ornately decorated antique electrified hanging lantern from San Miguel de Allende, Mexico (New Spain). Exquisitely hand-crafted in the 19th century (possibly late 18th century), even though San Miguel was the first town in present day Mexico to win independence from the Spanish Empire in the early nineteenth century, this lantern displays strong European old world influence. Constructed of wonderfully patinated wrought iron and oxidized tin, tall cylindrical shaped, framed with intricate scrollwork, openwork, and an abundance of fiolate decoration in the delicate form of serrated acanthus leaves. Retaining the six original bubble glass panels. The interior having a central candelabra like independently hung fixture adorned with six faux candle flame light bulbs. Originally made before the invention of electricity, this lantern has been converted from candle light to modern day electricity, accepting standard candelabra bulbs. Faux flaming bulbs included. It can be used a variety of ways, including as an indoor hanging pendant lamp, chandelier, outdoor patio or covered entry way, or placed as a table lamp on a large console table or sideboard.
