About the Item

TYGE HVASS - SCANDINAVIAN MODERN DESIGN A beautiful sculptural pair of unika wall-mounted lamps designed by Tyge Hvass circa 1950 for a private home, Denmark. The lamps are made of patinated brass frame. Sides, bottom and front with matte, white opal glass. Measures: H 28.5 cm, D 14 cm, W 16-24 cm. Full working order and excellent vintage condition. Interior: The lamps work well in a settings where the lamps can be dimmed - eg. dining room, cinema room or bedroom. Tyge Hvass (5 July 1885-4 September 1963) was a Danish functionalist architect and among the first pioneers of this great era. He had both a national and international career. Tyge Hvass was the architect of the Danish building at the International Expositions in Barcelona (1929) and took as a starting point Danish vernacular architecture. Lighting for the pavilion was from Louis Poulsen - designed by Poul Henningsen and the furniture was designed by Kaare Klint, the great masters of Danish Design. Picture attached. Other works: Tyge Hvass conducted design work at the World Exhibition in San Francisco (1915) and for Kay Fisker at the construction of the Danish building at the International Exhibition in Paris (1925). He was the architect for the Danish exhibition in Cologne (1927) and for the Danish exhibition at the Brooklyn Museum in New York City (1928) and for the Danish building at the International Expositions in Barcelona (1929), Antwerp (1930), Brussels (1935), Paris (1937) and New York City (1939). About us: We specialise in fine works of original twentieth-century design with specific focus on Scandinavian design from the period 1930 to 1960. We procure items that have a history and/or have a particular aesthetic from the period.
