About the Item

A refined interpretation of Tiffany Studios New York’s celebrated Lily design, this matching pair of “Three-Light Lily” wall sconces features golden Favrile glass blossoms that cast warm halos of light across the room. The patinated bronze mounts contrast beautifully with the iridescent glass, creating a harmonious play of texture and tone. Sold exclusively as a set. Item #: YL-22045 Artist: Tiffany Studios New York Country: United States Circa: 1905 Dimensions: 13.125" height, 9" width, 8.375" depth. Materials: Favrile Glass, Bronze Shade Signed: L.C.T. Literature: Similar sconces are pictured in: Tiffany Lamps and Metalware: An illustrated reference to over 2000 models, by Alastair Duncan, Woodbridge: Suffolk: Antique Collectors' Club, 1988, p. 351, plate 1454. Macklowe Gallery Curator's Notes: These favrile glass shades take the form of morning glories. Inspired by Japanese woodblock prints, Tiffany created numerous watercolor paintings of morning glories, entranced by their polychromatic brilliance and trumpet-like shape. The morning glory, or asagao, was beloved by the Japanese as the commoner's flower. The asagao blooms at dawn before the sun rises, and consequently, asagao lovers have to rise early to appreciate the blossoms. Like the morning glory rises to the sun, so do these sconces come alive with the addition of light.

Pair of Tiffany Studios New York "Globe" Glass and Bronze Chandeliers
By Louis Comfort Tiffany, Tiffany Studios
Located in New York, NY
This enchanting pair of Tiffany Studios New York "hanging globe" chandeliers are composed of two reticulated glass shades. Tiffany’s idea of blowing glass through openwork bronze had evolved in the 1890s with a series of Byzantine revival fuel lamps. The technique was popularized by 19th-century Muranese Glassmakers Salvati as a derivation of the Ancient Roman cage cup (vasa diatreta). In the 4th century, Roman glassmakers encased blown glass vessels in a delicate cage of glass. In Tiffany’s version, glass is blown through an ogival pattern cage. Originating in 11th-century Byzantine textiles, the ogival pattern became established in Italy, Ottoman Turkey, North Africa, and as far west as the Balkans.
