About the Item

The iridescent sheen of this "Candlestick" Lamp was achieved through a process of spraying tin chloride onto hot cobalt glass, followed by reheating in a low-oxygen, reducing environment. This iridescence was initially created by forming a mirror-like finish both inside and outside the glass, achieved by turning the oil fire to its highest setting before applying the sprays. Once the desired rich colors appeared, the flame was lowered to a normal heat. The organic ruffling of the shade showcases the exceptional skill and confidence of Tiffany’s glassmakers. Instead of using conventional tools like crimping irons, they allowed the molten glass to naturally take shape by swinging it upside down on the blowpipe. The shade connects to the base with a smooth, feathered favrile glass stem, contrasting the striking blue shade with a delightful contrast. The lamp was thus named by the shade's "candlestick" base, complete with a flange, neck, and a bobeche—a disk-like top that catches dripping wax. The lamp's base features a mold-blown pattern of ten vertical ribs, twisting elegantly from the flange to the bottom. Item #: L-21764 Artist: Tiffany Studios New York Country: United States Circa: 1900 Dimensions: 7.25" diameter, 12" height Materials: Favrile Glass, Gilt Bronze Base Signed: L.C.T Favrile Literature: Duncan, Alastair, and Tiffany Studios (New York, N.Y.). Tiffany Lamps and Metalware : An Illustrated Reference to over 2000 Models. 1st ed, Antique Collector’s Club, 2007. p.64, no. 246 Macklowe Gallery Curator's Notes: Favrile is the trade name Louis Comfort Tiffany gave to his blown art glass. The name derives from the Latin word fabrilis, meaning "made by hand." The technique was developed at Tiffany Furnaces in the mid-1890s using filaments from batches of differently colored glass and working the material while the glass was still molten.

Tiffany glass refers to the many and varied types of glass developed and produced from 1878 to 1933 at the Tiffany Studios in New York, by Louis Comfort Tiffany and a team of other designers, including Clara Driscoll, Agnes F. Northrop and Frederick Wilson. In 1865, Tiffany traveled to Europe, and in London he visited the Victoria and Albert Museum, whose extensive collection of Roman and Syrian glass made a deep impression on him. He admired the coloration of medieval glass and was convinced that the quality of contemporary glass could be improved upon. In his own words, the "Rich tones are due in part to the use of pot metal full of impurities, and in part to the uneven thickness of the glass, but still more because the glass maker of that day abstained from the use of paint". Tiffany was an interior designer, and in 1878 his interest turned toward the creation of stained glass, when he opened his own studio and glass foundry because he was unable to find the types of glass that he desired in interior decoration. His inventiveness both as a designer of windows and as a producer of the material with which to create them was to become renowned. Tiffany wanted the glass itself to transmit texture and rich colors and he developed a type of glass he called "Favrile". The glass was manufactured at the Tiffany factory...
