Modernist desk lamp after a Bauhaus design, 1970s

About the Item

A modernist brass Bauhaus style lamp, often attributed to, but certainly inspired by the Bauhaus designs in general and this particular design is often attributed to Marcel Breuer. The lampshade is adjustable using a wheel at the shaft, which enables to adjust the light intensity on the surface below. On the base the lamp is marked: ''Staatliches Bauhaus Weimar'' This 1970s lamp is a quite heavy, well made piece in good condition with few signs of wear. It works with one E27 lightbulb. Wiring has been tested and is in good condition. About the Bauhaus School: In 1919, Walter Gropius opened the Bauhaus in Weimar with a radical teaching approach. Four years passed before the first exhibition took place, which conveys a new approach to art to the enthusiastic public and carries the school’s ideas all over the world. The first public appearance was accompanied with the catalogue Staatliches Bauhaus Weimar 1919–1923. With the help of this interdisciplinary catalogue, the idea and potential of the Bauhaus found its way onto paper for the first time. In addition to numerous project presentations, the theoretical approaches of Paul Klee, Wassily Kandinsky and Gertrud Grunow convey the teaching methods of the various masters. Gropius’ preface traces the structure of the school and presents the unique reform approach that demands and teaches the unity of technology and art. The illustrations from the preliminary course and the various workshops provide insights into training and production at the Bauhaus. About Marcel Breuer Marcel Breuer has had an enormous influence on designs for furniture and interiors. Trained at the Bauhaus, with its emphasis on knowledge of materials, the young Breuer brought to his work a vital originality of conception and freedom of mind. His invention of tubular-steel furniture, uniquely suited to the modern interior and to modern methods of mass production, was revolutionary setting off a tremendous burst of creativity in the world of design. His experiments with aluminum and plywood were basic contributions to the development of contemporary furniture.

A Gerrit Rietveld desk, manufactured by Cassina, 1970s
By Cassina, Gerrit Rietveld
Located in EVERDINGEN, NL
A vintage Rietveld crate desk by Cassina, 1970s. While an original 1930s desk by Gerrit Rietveld is extremely hard to come by, a Cassina one is also a rare find. There weren't that many made and they haven't been available as a re-edition for a long time. The desk is in very good condition regarding its age, with small signs of the time and a lovely patina on the wood. It has a drawer on both sides, fully functional. The pictures show how well the desk combines with a Rietveld L40 tube lamp and a v.d. Groenekan Zig Zag, as well as enhancing the impression of size and scale. The Groenekan is one of the provenanced set we've also listed on 1st Dibs. It is possible to purchase one instead of set of two. The iconic crate desk, designed in 1934 by Dutch architect and furniture designer Gerrit T. Rietveld as part of the crate furniture series – initially made of inexpensive planks of pine, which were joined by screws. Rietveld had drawn inspiration from the crates used to move furniture for transportation, a construction of which he described as ‘good carpentry […] that gets straight to the point’. Aesthetics and an egalitarian spirit were of equal importance to Rietveld in this design. He recognized that industrializing the production process and allowing buyers to assemble their own furniture were ways of making good design affordable. Accordingly, the Crate furniture could be ordered preassembled or in do-it-yourself kits. Initially, items for the Crate series...
