Tiffany Studios New York "Jeweled Prism" Table Lamp

About the Item

This exquisite Tiffany Studios Jeweled prism lamp features a pierced heat cap adorned with a border of twenty ogival turtleback tiles. The ogival motif, which originated in 11th-century Byzantine textiles, became a prominent design element across Italy, Ottoman Turkey, North Africa, and the Balkans. The pierced and chased decoration on the cap forms an intricate shamsa pattern—an elaborately decorated rosette traditionally found in Islamic manuscripts, carpets, ornamental metalwork, and architectural embellishments like the undersides of domes. Meaning “little sun,” shamsa symbolizes the unity of God in Islam. Descending from the heat cap, each golden prism shimmers with remarkable transparency, casting an iridescent glow. No two prisms are alike, creating a watercolor-like effect that shifts from pale yellow to green to orange, with hints of blue. Tiffany’s fascination with prismatic color theory, inspired by Isaac Newton’s Opticks, was reflected in his writings for Scientific American. Newton’s famous prism experiment demonstrated that white light comprises a spectrum of colors, and by the late 19th century, amateur scientists were encouraged to replicate it using chandelier prisms. As a man of the modern age, Tiffany believed that science and art must co-function for the greatest effect. The shade is supported by a Jacob’s Ladder base, an elegant structure composed of six ladders with trifid feet resting on a round disk. Named after the biblical vision of a ladder ascending to heaven, as described in the Book of Genesis, the base lends a symbolic dimension to the lamp’s design. The lamp is fitted with three sockets, each operated by a pull chain. Item #: L-21810 Artist: Tiffany Studios New York Country: United States Circa: 1905 Dimensions: 19" diameter, 29" height. Materials: Favrile Glass, Bronze Base Signed: Tiffany Studios New York 548 Literature: A. Duncan, Tiffany Lamps and Metalware, Woodbridge, Suffolk, 2007, p. 121 no. 516 for the shade p. 124 another example of the base model illustrated p. 107, no. 431. Curator's Notes: Tiffany’s inspiration for pierced metal lighting stemmed from the Egyptian fanous, a traditional glass and metal lantern used to illuminate streets and homes during Ramadan. The delicate perforations cast mesmerizing patterns of light and shadow, evoking the ambiance of historic cityscapes. In his early twenties, Tiffany traveled to the mosques and bazaars of Old Cairo, where he was profoundly influenced by Islamic geometric and floriate patterns.

Tiffany Studios New York "Apple Blossom" Table Lamp
By Tiffany Studios
Located in New York, NY
A Tiffany Studios New York "Apple Blossom" glass and bronze table lamp. The shade features amber & green streaky glass branches with pink and white apple blossoms. The tonality of the leaves ranges from dense, deep greens at the crown to lighter greens below. The apple blossoms range from white at the shade's irregular border to pink with touches of red towards the crown. Tiffany's artisans skillfully incorporated specialized types of glass into the lampshade, specifically using foliage and granite glass. The unique texture of these glass varieties gives rise to a captivating interaction between degrees of translucency and opacity, evoking the dappled effect of sunlight filtering through tree branches. The shade sits atop a patinated bronze tree trunk base and is specially designed to fit it. The patinated bronze openwork crown lattice at the top of the shade resembles tree branches and is a direct extension of the base. Flowering apple trees grew on the grounds of his Laurelton Hall estate and appear as a motif in many of his windows and lamps. The spreading “Apple Blossom” lamp is the most stunning and realistic tree shape that Tiffany ever produced. Its intricacy and delicacy imbue the piece with radiant beauty and give it marked significance within the world of Tiffany lamps. In 1875, Tiffany photographed his wife Mary Goddard Tiffany and daughter Mae Mae picking apple blossoms on the grounds of his father Charles’ eighteenth century Dutch farmhouse in Irvington, NY. As a matter of both aesthetic and sentimental significance, Tiffany lined...
