About the Item

A stunning and rare candelabra-style table lamp crafted in 1927 by Vittorio Zecchin for MVM Cappellin, one of Murano’s most innovative and artistically driven glassmakers. This exceptional lamp features brown iridato soffiosiati glass—a delicate iridescent finish that shimmers subtly at certain angles, highlighting Zecchin’s mastery of both form and material. Unlike many lamps of its era, this piece showcases a refined, sculptural design that marries the classic elegance of Murano glassmaking with early modernist aesthetics. The glass body is blown in one large bubble and then expertly shaped, embodying the sophistication and technical brilliance that distinguished Cappellin’s output. Historical Context: Founded in 1921 by Giacomo Cappellin, Paolo Venini, and artist Vittorio Zecchin, MVM Cappellin marked a pivotal moment in the revival of Murano glassmaking. Though initially a collaboration, it was Zecchin’s role as art director that shaped the firm’s artistic identity—infusing Renaissance inspirations, like the “Veronese” vase modeled after Paolo Veronese’s Annunciation, with modern lines and new techniques such as filigrana and innovative iridescence. The company’s commitment to exquisite craftsmanship attracted master glassmakers like Nane Seguso, Diego Barovier, and Carlo Scarpa, who carried Murano’s legacy forward with technical rigor and creative flair. Despite critical acclaim and international recognition, the intense pursuit of perfection led to high costs that ultimately forced Cappellin’s closure in 1931. A famed anecdote from Murano’s lore recounts Cappellin’s fierce standards—when a slight difference in height was noted between two chandeliers, he famously destroyed them in front of his master glassblowers, illustrating his uncompromising dedication to excellence. This lamp is a rare surviving example of that uncompromising artistry and represents a key chapter in Murano’s history, blending the artisanal heritage with early 20th-century design innovation.
