English Regency Giltwood Convex Mirror with Ebonized Ball Accents

About the Item

An English Regency giltwood convex mirror from the early 19th century, notable for its classic circular form and bold decorative detailing. The molded frame is adorned with a continuous inner carved slip and a band of ebonized wooden spheres, a hallmark of the period’s design vocabulary. The convex mercury glass plate creates subtle optical distortion, enhancing both the decorative impact and the ambient light reflection in a space. The frame retains its original gilding, now softly worn with age to reveal areas of red bole beneath, lending it a warm, authentic patina. Black-painted trim surrounding the mirror further highlights the sculptural rhythm of the circular form. This type of mirror was typically placed over mantels or between windows in Regency interiors, prized for both its aesthetic value and ability to reflect candlelight. A versatile decorative accent, it works well in traditional and transitional settings alike. The back appears original and remains fully intact.
