About the Item

Austrian, Wien full length dressing mirror in stained and polished beechwood with double curved bentwood surround extending the full length of the stand and culminating in a very unusual and elegant leggy base. This standing mirror circa 1904 has its original one inch beveled glass inset. The mirror is typical of the Austrian style, sinuous and elegant in an organic approach with Bauhaus, Vienna Secession verve. This brown/ maroon hued, oxblood patined object d'art features undertones and highlights and is finished with a satin French polish. It can be used in a Brooklyn loft, Arts & Crafts home, midcentury environment, country home, study, entry foyer, bathroom, bedroom, living room, closet, dressing room or anywhere a dramatic statement is warranted. The mirror is made by steaming pieces of beech wood in saturated steam so that the wood bends more easily. Aspects of both machine and hand work are used to achieve Thonet's unique process. The firm perfected these techniques and Industrial designs and thus became very popular throughout Europe. Thonet played a key role in the development of the modern movement with his invention of the wood-bending process. Gebrüder Thonet exhibited at the world exhibition which took place in Paris in 1900. The museum of Applied Arts in Vienna owns a large collection of Thonet's production and hold exhibitions showcasing Thonet's historic objects and furniture. The Werkstätte was a productive cooperative of artisans in Vienna, Austria founded in 1903 by Josef Hoffman, Koloman Moser and Fritz Waerndorfer. Thonet (manufacturer) (1870-1956). Very Long /Wide French Art Deco Silvered Wood, Nickeled Bronze + Brass Mirror
Located in New York City, NY
An original French Art Deco long, wide and rectangular, silver over wood wall mirror with slightly curved top, fluted sides and angular accents of nickel and brass. The highly decorative ziggurat, sky scraper, stylized representation on the bronze mounts flanking each side and center distinguish this highly imposing mirror. The mirror features an overall authentic geometric expression with a period mirror inset. The inset shows some very small age spots on the glass which add to the mirror's charm and character. Since we cannot photograph the mirror due to it's reflection, I would approximate a total of ~35 tiny desilvered spots ranging in size from 1/4" maximum on ~ 5 spots, to miniscule in size on the remaining dots. Slightly rubbed/ mottled finish on the nickeled over bronze mounts with a satin finish on the wood, as shown in pics. This mirror is meant to be hung horizontally, making it perfect for use above a console, mantel, fireplace, in a bedroom, over a cabinet, in a dining room, hallway...More mirrors, Floor Mirrors and Full-Length Mirrors, Girandoles, Mantel Mirrors and Fireplace Mirrors, Pier Mirrors and Console Mirrors...
