About the Item

A common theme in the Tiffany Studios New York oeuvre, the peacock motif, as can be seen in this exquisite "Peacock" mirror, was a well-loved and oft-used theme. Featuring a finely sculpted patinated bronze base decorated with stylized peacock feathers, the piece is accented with multi-colored Favrile glass mosaic tiles, dotted around the rim of the mirror and on the charming "feather" feet. Item #: T-13056 Artist: Tiffany Studios New York Circa: 1910 Dimensions: 15.5" height, 18" width, 7.25" depth Materials: Bronze, Mirror glass, Favrile glass Signed: "Tiffany Studios New York 11434/898" and "3" Literature: Bronze mirror pictured in Tiffany at Auction, by Alastair Duncan, p. 47, cat. no. 127; Bronze mirror also pictured in Tiffany Lamps and Metalware, by Alastair Duncan, p. 402, plate #1626 Macklowe Gallery Curator's Notes: Peacock feathers were common motifs in Art Nouveau imagery; they were prized for their iridescent quality, their great range of color, their diaphanous nature, as well as their known symbolic standing as an icon of resurrection, renewal, and new life. They were also a personal favorite of Louis Comfort Tiffany's.

Pair of Tiffany Studios New York "Globe" Glass and Bronze Chandeliers
By Tiffany Studios, Louis Comfort Tiffany
Located in New York, NY
This enchanting pair of Tiffany Studios New York "hanging globe" chandeliers are composed of two reticulated glass shades. Tiffany’s idea of blowing glass through openwork bronze had evolved in the 1890s with a series of Byzantine revival fuel lamps. The technique was popularized by 19th-century Muranese Glassmakers Salvati as a derivation of the Ancient Roman cage cup (vasa diatreta). In the 4th century, Roman glassmakers encased blown glass vessels in a delicate cage of glass. In Tiffany’s version, glass is blown through an ogival pattern cage. Originating in 11th-century Byzantine textiles, the ogival pattern became established in Italy, Ottoman Turkey, North Africa, and as far west as the Balkans.
