French 19th Century Painted Trumeau Mirror
About the Item
This romantic trumeau is a lovely combination of a piece that is both architectural and artistic. An oil-on-canvas painting in the top depicts an imaginative landscape of ancient ruins and humble dwellings on the banks of a river, captured in organic tones of forest green and burnt sienna. To the lower left one observes a finely dressed lady playing a type of string instrument for her beau, leaning toward her with keen interest. A craquelure texture in the paint and some loss (including a tear) partially obscures full appreciation of the landscape. The original mirror plate–sparkling with a few crystals and spotty foxing–is surrounded by carved molding that is coordinating but not identical to the artwork above. An exceptional carved and painted Trumeau mirror, circa 1800, France. The antique mirror features a large carved and gilt wreath that is situated in the larger shaped panel above the glass. It consists of carved and blossoming roses on one side, with a laurel branch on the other, meeting in the middle at a carved knotted ribbon with tassels. Below this wonderful work of art is the Trumeau mirror. The mirror is nearly square, measuring 17” H x 18-½” W, and is framed by carved and gilt trim, worked into twisted ribbon and beaded pearl motifs.
