About the Item

This exceptional and rare 18th century giltwood mirror is distinguished by its finely carved decoration and the presence of original parecloses—the smaller mirrored panels that frame the central glass. These elements, once a hallmark of luxury, enhance both the sense of depth and the brilliance of the reflection, while their delicately foxed mercury surfaces today lend the piece a romantic patina of age. The crest features a sculpted basket brimming with fruit, flowers, and foliage, symbolizing abundance and prosperity. Scrolling acanthus leaves, floral rosettes, and beaded borders enrich the frame, displaying the refined artistry of the period. The gilding has mellowed to a warm tone, further emphasizing the depth of the carving. Most intriguing is the projecting giltwood arm below the mirror. Its scrollwork and rosette base suggest it was originally designed as a girandole candleholder, intended to amplify candlelight reflected in the mirror. However, its broad rounded finial also recalls wig or hat stands, raising the possibility that it served a dual purpose in elegant 18th century interiors. With its harmonious proportions, rare parecloses, and multifunctional design, this mirror exemplifies the ingenuity and grandeur of French decorative arts. A striking and conversation-worthy addition to any refined collection.
