19th C. American Flame Mahogany Ogee Mirror with Period French Fashion Prints
About the Item
Unique 19th century American Empire flame mahogany ogee frame mirror with a pair of mid 1800s French fashion prints under glass.
The prints in soft colors were included in Peterson's Magazine, Les Modes Parisiennes, a monthly French publication (1843-1875). The magazine featured fashion plates that detailed the latest Parisian styles for dressmakers in the United States. The chief artist and illustrator was Francois-Claudius Compte-Calix who also exhibited his paintings at the Paris Salon. The Illman brothers, printers and engravers in Philadelphia, often printed these fashion plates.
A charming mirror blending quality American craftsmanship with the elegance of French fashion in a gorgeous, richly-toned mahogany frame. It has some fracture points on the slim, inner part around the prints that do not take away from the beauty of this distinctive piece.
