About the Item
The period of Napoleon III, also known as the Second Empire, was an eclectic style, drawing from the preceding periods. Regardless of where the inspiration came from, the main tenet of furnishings from this period was to leave no space undecorated. This large wall mirror adheres to this principle, from the bead and reel that surrounds the shaped beveled glass to the elaborate crest that tops the arched frame.
Outside of the bead and reel border is a thick quarter-round molding adorned with twisted fluting. A winged putto forms the center of the crest, flanked near the bottom by a pair of foliate rinceaux. Just outside the terminal whorl of each leaf is a flowering urn finial above a gargoyle looking out from the sides of the frame. A floral bouquet hands from the mouth of each mascaron, extending well off the angular corners of the frame. At the rounded bottom of the frame is a shaped cartouche with an inset cabochon. Two large leaves curl up the sides of the mirror, set above and to the sides of the cartouche. The entire frame has been painted more recently in a light blue, making our Napoleon III beveled wall mirror a unique addition for a hallway, bathroom, or living room.

View AllLarge Antique French White Painted Trumeau Boiserie Mirror, Circa 1870
Located in Dallas, TX
Trumeau boiserie mirrors, such as this painted white offering from France, were designed to be placed on a wall in between two windows. The motifs and color palettes of these mirrors would often match the surrounding paneling. Based on the size (seven+ feet tall and over four and a half feet wide), our mirror would have been hung in a large room such as a salon.
The inclusion of a floral latticework with canted upper corners that are topped by volute leaves indicates this mirror is in the style of the Regence Period. Also of note is the large foliate medallion that surmounts the lattice, flanked by C-scrolls that seamlessly transition into floral margents; these are traits of the Rococo style that emerged during the reign of the Regent. The shaped glass pane is surrounded by a border of beading set inside thick, protruding molding adorned with foliage. Our white trumeau mirror...

Louis Napoleon Bonaparte
(1808-1873) was Emperor of France from 1852 to 1870 under the name of Napoleon III. In a way, the artistic codes of the Napoleon III style — also called Second Empire style — were presented at the Exhibition of 1844, during the reign of Louis-Philippe d'Orléans. He was an important influence on architecture, interior furnishings and decoration throughout the rest of Europe and North America.
The Napoleon III style (also known as Second Empire) stands as one of the most unique styles ever produced. The eclecticism of the Second Empire is reflected in the association of past tradition with the development of modernism. It was often referred to as a “style without style”. The Napoleon III ”style” was in fact more of a combination of different styles from past centuries adapted to the modern era in order to correspond to a time of dynamic, innovative transformation. It stands out because there is nothing within it that is unique to itself. Everything, including materials, forms reproduced, and ornamentation used, was borrowed from styles that preceded it. Instead of drawing their inspiration from a single period, the artists and decorators from the Second Empire drew indiscriminately, with joyful exuberance, from all sources. Even so, this style, which is so apparently lacking originality, carries on a recognizable personality and is easily identified.
