Late 19th Century English Savages Carved Fairground Mirror
About the Item
Late 19th century English savages carved fairground mirror
We are proud to offer a rare example of a hand carved English fairground carousel mirrored panel attributed to the “Savages” fairground family. With 2 carved dragons sat at the crown, 2 elephant heads either side and naïve floral detail around the frame. Untouched painted surface and an original 19th Century mirror plate still usable and firmly in place. A truly magnificent example of English fairground craftsmanship of years gone by. Carved numbers at the rear read 44 and original cast iron metal hooks are still in place. This example would have been accompanied by numerous similar panels to fit around a large fairground ride of sorts. The painted text has obviously been added around the mid-20th Century, which is typical of these examples being used repeatedly. Made from thick wooden panelled sections this item weights close to 30kg, It would make an amazing statement piece in any cool interior space.
Size in inches approx.: H 63” x W 30” x D 3.5”
Period: late 19th century – mid 20th century text
Material: Wood / glass / cast iron
Origin: English
Condition: Aged
Completely solid in structure and form, naturally faded across all its surfaces with loss of paint in areas. The carved wood dates to the late 19th Century and shows a good natural aged surface, with worn edges and flaking paint (most firmly in place) The Mirror is very usable and the reflection is clear, there are mercury faded sections and it has a faded sparkle as most plates from the 19th Century would. We have used a replacement reflection from a stock image library to represent a reflection however the other close-up images aim to show the true nature of the mirror. A very heavy item and the shipping cost reflects this. This is an authentic aged item which is over 100 years old. Please expect the condition to reflect this. It is exceedingly difficult to photograph all the areas on this piece. Therefore, we strongly suggest reviewing all the photos provided as part of this advert and propose questions where sections / condition is unclear to avoid disappointment when purchasing.
