About the Item
Swiss Shako helmet made from leather and felt
Swiss, 19th Century
Height 30cm, width 20cm, depth 26cm
This fantastic piece is a 19th century Swiss military helmet, of the shako-type, and is filled with details that tell us about the country’s military history. The body of the shako is made from black felt and leather, with thick black leather visors at the front and back of the helmet to shield the soldier.
In the centre of the silver rim is a pompon with a horse-hair aigrette, adding a touch of decoration which is often not preserved on these models. There is also embossed lion decoration on the sides of the shako. An eight-point star adorns the front of the helmet, surmounted by a Swiss Cross upon a wreath. The number 20 signifies the regiment of the Swiss army which the helmet’s owner would have been a part of.
The shako became common military headdress in Europe and America from the beginning of the 19th century onwards. Whilst previous helmets, such as the bicorne, were much lighter in design, the heavy materials of the shako meant that it provided greater protection and was able to better retain its shape, and the introduction of a shading visor protected the soldier’s eyes.
An interesting piece of history in its own right, this well-preserved helmet would make an excellent and unusual gift for anyone interested in military history.

View AllThree Sterling Silver Mounted Commemorative Horse Hoof Inkwells
Located in London, GB
These interesting inkwells were crafted in Britain between the Victorian period and early to mid-20th century.
The works have been created from horse hooves, applied with sterling silver mounts. Each hoof has been set onto a silver horseshoe and features a silver top and lid. Two of the tops have been engraved to imitate real horse hair, while the third is more simple, with banded ornament. All three have been given covers, two of which feature commemorative inscriptions. One lid states, ‘The Grey/1907-1917’ — presumably the name of the favourite racehorse, whose hoof this is — and another reads, ‘Mavourneen/ Died June 29th / Aged 53’. ‘Mavourneen’ is an Irish Gaelic word meaning ‘my beloved’. The dedicatee’s age of 53 implies that they were a human, perhaps a jokey, or racehorse owner. The lids open up onto a silver-lined interior, intended to be used for storing ink as part of a desk arrangement. The inkwells are stamped, on their underside, with silver hallmarks and maker’s marks, ‘J.T.’ and ‘C & CS’.

A Tabarzin, Indian saddle-axe from Bikaner, 19th century
Indian, 19th century
Measures: height 56cm, width 12.5cm, depth 4cm
This magnificent piece is a tabarzin, a battle saddle-axe, made in North West India in Bikaner sometime in the early nineteenth century. The head of the axe is engraved with intricate floral motifs, the handle superbly decorated with an ornate chased gilt pattern along its length. Dense and beautiful floral scroll patterns line its length, and the base unscrews to reveal a stunning hidden dagger, that is approximately a third of the axe's length. Pieces such as these are Indo-Persian, heavily indebted to Persian tabar axes, and comparable examples are to be found in the Victoria & Albert Museum in London and in the Wallace Collection, London. A remarkable item of military history...
