A smart two volume set of this collection of writings from English naturalist Gilbert White, with illustrations throughout. Folding Maps, Illustrated, Original Binding, Publishers' Original Binding, With Slipcase Complete in two volumes. A review copy with the letter of request from The Nonesuch Press Ltd., and a handwritten draft of the previous owner's response. Illustrated with thirty-five in-text wood engravings and two maps, one of which is folding. Collated complete. A selection of the works of Gilbert White, a "parson-naturalist", a pioneering English naturalist, ecologist, and ornithologist, best known for his Natural History and Antiquities of Selborne. Includes The Natural History of Selborne, Letters to Thomas Pennant, Letters to Daines Barrington, A Summary of the Weather, The Naturalist's Journal, The Antiquities of Selborne, Poems, Private Correspondence, and more. With a detailed index. Edited and selected with an introduction by Harold John Massingham, a prolific British writer on ruralism, matters to do with the countryside and agriculture, and a published poet. Illustrated by Eric William Ravilious, a British painter, designer, book illustrator and wood-engraver. In the original full cloth binding. Externally, very smart with light fading to the spine. Original paper-covered slip case is also smart with light rubbing and sunning to the extremities. The odd small mark to the boards. Slip case very good indeed. Internally, firmly bound. Pages are very bright and clean with the odd small spot to the foredge. Minor rust marks to the front endpaper of volume two from the staples of the request for review. Overall: Near Fine
