The work addresses social and intellectual issues faced by African Americans, and is considered to be one of the best English novels of the twentieth century. The novel follows the life of an unnamed Black man as he navigates life, friendships and betrayal, and the real world societal and political issues many African-American's faced during the twentieth century.
Winner of the U. S. National book award for fiction in 1953, with Ellison being the first African-American writer to win the award.
