The sought after first edition, first printing of Ralph Ellison's monumental award winning novel, his first and only work to be published during his lifetime. The first edition, first printing as stated to the edition page. In the publisher's original two tone cloth and the original, first issue dust wrapper designed by E. McKnight Kauffer. The renowned award winning first novel from Ralph Ellison, his only work to be published in his lifetime. The work addresses social and intellectual issues faced by African Americans, and is considered to be one of the best English novels of the twentieth century. The novel follows the life of an unnamed Black man as he navigates life, friendships and betrayal, and the real world societal and political issues many African-American's faced during the twentieth century. Winner of the U. S. National book award for fiction in 1953, with Ellison being the first African-American writer to win the award. In the publisher's original cloth with the original unclipped dust wrapper. Externally lovely with only minimal discolouration to the head of the spine. The wrap is very smart with very small closed tears and to the extremities, and a mark to the front. Tape repairs to the verso. Internally firmly bound with clean and bright pages. Overall: Fine
