DESCRIPTION: FIRST EDITION THE DOHENY COPY. 1 vol., 9-1/4" x 6", (x)253pp., with the additional engraved title-page, bound in the publisher’s original gilt and blind stamped green/blue cloth. CONDITION: Rubbing to back corners, head and foot of spine, and front hinge with some loss, hinges firm, internally clean and bright, leather bookplate of Estelle Doheny to front pastedown. ADDITIONAL INFORMATION: First published anonymously in the Troy, New York Sentinel on December 23, 1823. Not only is this the first formal book appearance of Clement Moore's "A Visit from St. Nicholas" under his name, now more widely known "Twas the Night Before Christmas", the poem is also the first time each of Santa Claus's reindeer are named.
