Report upon the Colorado River of the West by Joseph Ives, First Edition, 1861

About the Item

Ives, Joseph Christmas. Report upon the Colorado River of the West. Washington: Government Printing Office, 1861. First Edition, Senate Issue. Extensively illustrated with maps, engravings, lithographic plates, panoramas, and woodcuts. In the original cloth covers, with gilt vignette to front, blind embossed back boards, rebacked with spine lettered in gilt. Presented is a first edition, Senate Issue of “Report upon the Colorado River of the West” by Joseph C. Ives. Preceded only by the shorter 1858 preliminary report, this is the first printing of Ives's complete report, including information on the geology, botany, and zoology of the area by John Strong Newberry, Asa Grey, Spencer Fullerton Baird and others. It is illustrated with folding maps, engraved and lithographed views, color plates of indigenous Americans, folding panoramas, engraved paleontology plates, and numerous woodcuts, by Möllhausen and some of the leading artists of the time. A superb study of the Colorado River, this volume was published by the Government Printing Office, in Washington, DC, in 1861. It is presented here in the original cloth covers with gilt vignette to front ans later cloth rebacking with spine lettered in gilt. In the mid-19th century, much of the American West was still unexplored and undocumented by the United States. In order to determine whether the Colorado River had potential to become a major shipping route, the United States sponsored the Colorado Exploration Expedition, also called the Ives Expedition. A Lieutenant in the U.S. Army Corps of Topographical Engineers, Joseph C. Ives was eager to explore and document the region. From 1857 to 1858, Ives and his team collected numerous specimens and managed to navigate their steam boat to the entrance of the Grand Canyon. Unfortunately for Ives, his boat crashed and they continued the journey for thirty miles on foot, producing sketches and descriptions of the dazzling scenes. Ives believed that, despite the natural wonders and vast geological features of the impressive area, he would be the last person to visit the Grand Canyon in its harsh, dry environment and much of the Colorado River would remain unexplored. In the report, Ives concluded that the Colorado River, which runs through the Grand Canyon, was unsuitable for trading and transportation routes. He ascertained that the only way into the canyon was from the south and once inside, not much by way of navigation could be done. He may have been the first man from the United States to visit the Grand Canyon, but he was far from the last. Lieutenant Ives had never foreseen the immense interest the American people would have in such natural grandeur. This report on Ives’ explorations includes the Lieutenant’s observations as well as those of his accompanying scientists. It is divided into five parts: General Report, Hydrographic Report , Geological Report by Newberry, Botany by Gray, Torrey, and Englemann, and Zoology by Baird, plus appendixes on meteorology. William Goetzmann calls the study "the best by far of these individual reports ... It is a long, carefully written journal, consciously literary but with a maximum amount of attention to scientific observation. John Strong Newberry's geological report, which accompanied Ives's narrative, is one of the best of the government geological reports" (Wagner, Camp, Becker). The highly illustrated book was the first published account in the United States detailing the vast Colorado River, The Grand Canyon, and the scientific specimens found there. Catch-22 by Joseph Heller, First Edition, First Printing, in Original DJ, 1961
By Joseph Heller
Located in Colorado Springs, CO
Heller, Joseph. Catch-22. New York: Simon and Schuster, 1961. First edition, first printing. Octavo. In original blue cloth boards, stamped in white. In the original unclipped dust jacket. Presented with a new archival ¼ leather and cloth clamshell. Presented is the first edition, first printing of Joseph Heller’s Catch-22. Catch-22 was published by Simon and Schuster, in October of 1961. This book is presented in the original publisher’s blue cloth boards, titled and embossed in white, and the original, unclipped dust-jacket. The Simon and Schuster “A Note to the Reader” postcard is laid in. The book comes with a new, archival ¼ leather and cloth clamshell. Catch-22 was Joseph Heller’s first novel and his most acclaimed work. Set during World War II, the novel uses a unique, non-chronological third-person narration, mainly focusing on the life of a B-25 bombardier in the U.S. Army, Captain John Yossarian, and his attempts to avoid bombing runs. Both the title and plot device, “Catch-22” refers to an Air Forces regulation which asserts that a man is considered insane if he willingly agrees to fly dangerous combat missions, but that if he makes the formal request to be relieved of such missions, the very act of making the request proves that he is sane and therefore ineligible to be relieved." By the end of the novel, the phrase is invoked as the explanation for many unreasonable restrictions. “Catch-22” has since entered the English lexicon. Heller spent eight years writing "Catch-22," and used his own war experiences as inspiration for the novel. From 1942 to 1945, Heller served as a combat bombardier in the Twelfth Air Force and was stationed on the Island of Corsica. Upon publication, the book was not an immediate bestseller, but did elicit glowing reviews from some. “Wildly original, brilliantly comic, brutally gruesome, it is a dazzling performance that will probably outrage nearly as many readers as it delights. In any case, it is one of the most startling first novels of the year and it may make its author famous” (Orville Prescott, New York Times). It became a publishing sensation thanks to the 1962 paperback edition, which set record sales and benefitted from the national debate surrounding the Vietnam War. In the decades since, it has inspired a feature film, a miniseries, a 50-character stage play, and sold more than 10 million...

Presented is a first edition, second printing of The Flag of the United States: Your Flag and Mine by Harrison S. Kerrick. This book was published by The Champlin Printing Co. in Columbus, Ohio. The first edition, first printing of this title was issued in February of 1925; this second printing was issued in April of 1925. This book is a culmination of lifelong passion and respect for the American flag by the author Harrison S. Kerrick. The book begins by detailing the acts of continental and national Congresses, presidential proclamations, and Executive Orders that established the United States flag and Great Seal. He discusses the state laws pertaining to the American flag and argues the importance of a national flag code. Kerrick delves into the past history of flag design, including which European flags were popular in the early colonies, the early banners of the colonies, and the design elements that make up the stars and stripes as we know it today. He spends two chapters covering the facts and fictional myths surrounding our national flag. He then details how best to use the flag for personal and public use, inclduding how to create a flag, care for a flag, and the codes of conduct surrounding the proper display of the flag. Lieutenant colonel Harrison Summers Kerrick (1873 – 1939) was an United States Army officer, teacher, and author. Kerrick was born in 1873 in Bloomington, Illinois, and attended Illinois Wesleyan University. In 1898, he enlisted in Company C of the 2nd Illinois Volunteer Infantry, serving in the Spanish–American War, during which he was promoted to captain. He served as a field artillery officer in the Philippine–American War and in WWI, he served in the U.S. Army Coast Artillery Corps from December 1917 to February 1918. A lecturer and teacher, Kerrick was also the author of two books, Military and Naval America and The Flag of the United States. Passionate about American history and the symbolism of the American flag, Kerrick created the code of conduct on the proper handling and display of the United States flag, which was later adopted by the United States Congress...

The Flag of the United States by Milo Milton Quaife, First Edition, 1942
Located in Colorado Springs, CO
Quaife, Milo Milton. The Flag of the United States. New York: Grosset & Dunlap, 1942. First edition. Octavo. Rebound in ¼ leather and cloth boards, with raised bands and gilt embossed titles to the spine. Illustrated. Presented with a matching archival slipcase. Presented is a first edition printing of The Flag of the United States by Milo Milton Quaife. The book was published in New York by Grosset & Dunlap in 1942. It is presented here rebound in ¼ leather and cloth boards, with raised bands and gilt titles to the spine, and a matching archival slipcase. Quaife wrote The Flag of the United States in order to present “the true and authentic history of the United States.” Wading through the myths and stories surrounding the flag, he details the origins and evolution of the American flag, using careful research to determine fact from fiction. There are several chapters on the early flags of Spain, France, and Holland in America and Quaife traces the development of the American flag from its English predecessor. He articulates the twenty-nine word resolution of the Second Continental Congress that made the flag of the United States, then outlines the changes to the flag’s design made in 1795, 1818, and 1912. He has a chapter on Civil War flags, a chapter on flags of the Army, and several debunking the many myths surrounding the American flag. This book was very well received upon its publication. “Quaife is entitled to a good deal of praise for having written a straightforward, and very readable, history of our flag” (Ralph W. Steen, Southwestern Historical Quarterly, 1943). “To read this history of our flag is to read the history of these United States, not only in the years when we became an infant nation, but also in those later years variously devoted to territorial expansion, extending our commerce, and fighting other wars.” (Ardelia Olden Koch, Wisconsin Magazine of History, 1943). Milo Milton Quaife (1880–1959) was a historian and writer, born in Nashua, Iowa. He received his education at Grinnell College, the University of Missouri, and the University of Chicago. Quaife was a published historian of the Great Lakes region, the Mississippi River valley, the Gold Rush, and President Polk...
