About the Item

Taking Shape: Abstraction from the Arab World, 1950s1980s. 1st Ed Exhibition hardcover. Published by Hirmer Publishers, 2020. Taking Shape traces the emergence and development of abstraction in the Arab World through paintings and sculpture dating from the 1950s through the 1980s. Drawn from the collection of the Barjeel Art Foundation in Sharjah, United Arab Emirates, this book features nearly ninety works by a diverse group of artists whose creative visions stretched beyond the boundaries of representation. Taking Shape explores how twentieth-century abstraction developed and played out across the Arab World. Including artists working in Algeria, Egypt, Iraq, Kuwait, Lebanon, Morocco, Palestine, Sudan, Syria, Tunisia, and the United Arab Emirates, this collection reveals the truly global reach of abstract art. It sheds light on a number of abstract movements initiated by artists' collectives and individual practitioners, both in the region and among the Arab diaspora. Taking Shape also examines how these artists moved away from figuration and naturalistic depictions of reality toward investigations into the expressive capacities of line, color, and texture. Placing the featured artists and their works within larger cultural and global contexts, Taking Shape contributes to the burgeoning field of scholarship on art from the Middle Eastern and North African regions, establishing global art as a central component of modernity. Michelangelo. The Drawings of a Genius, 1st Ed Exhibition Catalog
Located in valatie, NY
Michelangelo. The Drawings of a Genius. By Achim Gnann. Preface by Klaus Albrecht Schröder. Published by the Albertina, Vienna. This catalogue is published in conjunction with the exhibition "Michelangelo: The Drawings of a Genius", Albertina, Vienna; October 8, 2010 - January 9, 2011. 478th. Published by Hatje Cantz, Ostfildern, 2010. 1st Ed softcover exhibition catalog. Michelangelo's drawings endowed human physique with an expressive musculature that remains to be rivaled in its feeling for corporeal articulation. His drawings of male nudes in particular, fraught as they are with tempestuous longing, project both tension and pliancy, and a compelling sense of health in the exertions and torque of bodies. He was also readily able to bring contrary qualities of grace and swiftness to depictions of women and cherubim. With over 300 color plates and extensive contextualizing scholarship, Michelangelo: The Drawings of a Genius is the most complete treatment of his work ever published, and thus constitutes a publication of great importance. Masterpieces from the world's finest museums are gathered, from the early studies for the "Battle of Cascina" and the studies for the Sistine Chapel frescoes, to the drawings for the tomb of Julius II, the Medici tombs...

An anthology of Russian mythology chronicles the legends and folklore of diverse regions of Russia, including epic tales of ancient gods and heroes, dragons and monsters, wonderful and mysterious adventures, and other imaginative sagas From School Library Journal Grade 6 Up Russian folklore receives the same somewhat sensationalized treatment as other books in this series. The fantastic elements found in Russian folklore, demons, wizards, and wondrous creatures have been emphasized over the equally prominent folk elements. Yet the tales are well-researched, based upon the original Russian story collections (Afanas'ev and Potebnya, among others) and are written in a readable style. Well-known characters such as Baba...

It is wonderful!" - Yotam Ottolenghi "A dazzling set of recipes from Reem Kassis" – Nigel Slater "Reem Kassis's cookbooks tell of her Palestinian family, while giving a modern twist to such dishes as fatteh, lentil soup and pistaschio cake" - The Observer Food Monthly Acclaimed author Reem Kassis returns with a one-of-a-kind collection of original contemporary recipes tracing the rich history of Arab cuisine.
