Five Original New York City Subway Straphangers on Pole
About the Item
Five original New York City subway straphangers mounted on the original pole. The cast iron and porcelain 'straphanger' or pivoting grab handle was made by the Rico manufacturing company of the United States in circa 1930 in a period industrial style. The cast iron handle has a heavy pivoting bracket at the top that is cast with the name "Rico", "Type 16A" and "Patented" and has a cream colored porcelain coating on the handle. These handles were used in subway cars for standing passengers and were also referred to as 'grab handles'. The porcelain does have some pieces missing and the handles do not pivot, but overall in good period condition.
