About

This is an original pastel of famed heavyweight Champ James J. Jeffries.
It is signed and dated Chas. Rose 1903. It sat behind a Coney Island New York bar for over 100 years. This is an impressive piece of art that stands 5 foot tall. Its framed and still has the original wavy glass. It's all there but does have an aged patina with some paper cracking and water stains. We love it just the way it is and it looks great where ever we hang it. Pastel art is so fragile I'm amazed it survived for well over 100 years.

James J. Jeffries was the heavyweight champion of the world from 1899 to 1905 but he is best known to history for coming out of retirement to take on Jack Johnson, the first African American heavyweight champion in history, in what was called "The Fight of the Century". That fight ensured Jeffries' place in American history as Johnson is a significant figure in not only sports history but in the social history of the United States for his role as a mirror on and lighting rod for racism.
