About the Item

President William McKinley as Napoleon Large Toby Mug, by Morris & Willmore Made by Columbian Art Pottery / Morris and Willmore of Trenton, New Jersey This model was made in sizes from 4.5-inches high to 11-inches high. Retailed and/or decorated by Alfred Evans, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, 1893-1901 A unique and historically significant piece, this large Toby mug depicts President William McKinley as Napoleon Bonaparte. Made by the short-lived American Pottery & Porcelain factory Columbian Art Pottery, under the direction of Morris and Willmore, this Toby mug captures a satirical political commentary of the time. The hand-painted pottery mug showcases a plump figure representing McKinley, adorned in a black tricorn hat, boots, a yellow vest, and a blue waistcoat. The meticulous painting of the face and hair adds a touch of realism to the portrayal. This Toby mug was created to draw a political parallel between McKinley and Napoleon, both known for their perceived imperialistic tendencies. It serves as a satirical representation of McKinley's leadership and foreign policy decisions during his presidency. The underside of the Toby mug's base bears the mark 'Napoleon Jug, Pat Apl For, Alfred B. Evans, Phila PA,' indicating the association with Alfred Evans, a retailer and decorator based in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, from 1893 to 1901. This large Toby mug is not only a captivating piece of pottery but also a historical artifact that reflects the political climate and sentiments of the late 19th and early 20th centuries. Embrace the unique blend of art, history, and satire with this President William McKinley as Napoleon Toby mug. Experience the craftsmanship and attention to detail evident in the hand-painted pottery. Add a touch of historical significance and political commentary to your collection or interior decor with this extraordinary piece. Don't miss the opportunity to own this intriguing Toby mug, retailed and/or decorated by Alfred Evans and created by Morris & Willmore of Columbian Art Pottery.
