About the Item

This is an exceptional printing of A. J. Johnson's highly desirable map of the state of Texas. The map was published by A. J. Johnson and Ward in the 1863 edition of Johnson's New Illustrated Family Atlas. Created at the height of the American Civil War, this extraordinary folio map details the state of Texas in full. The map was compiled from the famous De Cordova’s large map of the state, as well as an earlier map of the same area by J.H. Colton. This map covers the entire state as well parts of adjacent New Mexico, Arkansas, and the Indian Territory (Oklahoma). The map shows the Elevated Table Lands, the El Lando Estadado (the Staked Plain), and the U.S. Mail Route. Numerous geographical notations can be found on the map. The map is hand colored in pink, green, yellow and blue pastels, to indicate individual county lines, with original hand coloring. The counties of El Paso, Presidio and Behar are gigantic and occupy much of the western portion of the state. Insets in the lower left quadrant detail Sabine Lake with depth soundings, Galveston Bay, and the northern panhandle. Johnson used information from the U.S.C.S. survey when drawing the Galveston Bay inset. A.J. Johnson was active as a publisher from 1856 to the mid-1880s. Born into a poor family in Wallingford, Vermont, he received only a basic public education. He is known to have worked as schoolteacher for several years before moving to Richmond, Virginia. Johnson got his first taste of the map business as a salesman and book canvasser for J. H. Colton and Company. The earliest Johnson maps were published with D. Griffing Johnson and date to the mid-1850s. However it was not until 1860 that the Johnson firm, comprised of Johnson and his partner, another Vermonter named Ross C. Browning, published its first significant work- the New Illustrated Family Atlas. In 1861, following the outbreak of the American Civil War, the Johnson and Browning firm moved their office from Richmond, Virginia to New York City. Johnson and Browning published two editions of the Johnson’s Atlas in 1860 and 1861. Sometime in 1861 Browning's portion of the firm was purchased by Benjamin P. Ward, whose name subsequently replaced Browning's on the imprint. The 1864 issue of the Family Atlas is the first true Johnson and Ward atlas. Johnson published one more edition of the Atlas in partnership with Ward in 1865, after which Johnson seems to have bought out Ward's share the firm. The next issue of the Atlas, 1866, is the first purely "Johnson" atlas with all new map plates, updated imprints, and copyrights. In addition to the Family Atlas, Johnson issued numerous wall maps, pocket maps, and in the 1880s the Cyclopedia. Johnson maps are known for their size, accuracy, detail, and stunning, vivid hand coloring. Johnson maps, purely American in their style and execution, chronicle some of the most important and periods in American history including the Civil War, the Westward Expansion, and the Indian Wars. Today Johnson's maps are highly sought after by map collectors and historians. Condition: Good condition, with original hand coloring still intact. A strong and clear impression. Original fold line still visible at center. Slight discoloration seen at centerfold line, but not visually disruptive. The map is uniquely housed in an antique windowpane frame, with hand-painted script identifying the title and original publish date, as well as key locations like Austin, Dallas, Ft. Worth, Houston, Galveston, the Alamo, and others. Framed dimensions: 20" H x 29" W x 1 1/2" D.
