Handcrafted and truly beautiful Gothic chandelier. In antiques it often is the case that the older a piece is, the better the quality and the details. This pre 1900s, unique, meaningful and highly decorative Gothic chandelier is no exception to that. You will rarely come across a Gothic work of religious art that is more elaborate and detailed than this marvelous bronze chandelier from the mid to late 1800s. To us, this very rare Gothic chandelier is like an ode to the Virgin Mary, because with three large bronze winged sculptures of Mary with Her arms crossed and a Marian Cross at the center of each group of four candles, this chandelier surely must have been created by an artisan who felt a special kind of love for the Virgin Mary. Together with the 12 candle holders (representing the apostles) and the single large light in the middle (representing Jesus) they all give deeper meaning to this remarkable work of religious art. No maker in this day and age is prepared to first carve or sculpt all the individual and highly detailed elements of such a figural chandelier before having to cast them all in bronze. Never mind the polishing, the hand-drilling of screwthreads and putting or welding all the individual pieces together. It would nowadays make this meaningful and ornate work of lighting art way too expensive. The original and equally impressive 'cross chain' and Gothic-crown-canopy are in excellent condition as well and together they make this majestic and practical to use chandelier an absolute joy to own and look at. Simply because it creates a divine atmosphere. This wonderful chandelier is ready for immediate usage in your home, church or monastery. Thanks to the hook inside the canopy, safely mounting this work of religious art will take no more than a few minutes. Replacements made: The glass vessel holding the candle in the center of the stunning bronze 'base' is a replacement and it perfectly fits into the original brass ring that is there. Wear consistent with age and use. Over the many decades most of the gilding has warn off and it has given way to the most beautiful and truly ancient looking, golden bronze patina.
