Early 19th Century English Inclining Sundial by William Hawks Grice London. This is a form of portable folding horizontal dial, which can be adjusted for different latitudes by raising or lowering the hour plate and gnomon. It was made and signed by the prominent instrument maker William Hawks Grice, Bond Street London. The base frame consists of a circular brass plate containing a magnetic compass with degree scale engraved on a silvered plate. The hour ring plate is hinged to the North side of the base and the latitude arc is hinged to the East side of the plate. The inclined gnomon is set on a North South pivoted bar. The hours engraved on the silvered ring from 4 (IIII) am to 8 (VIII) pm and divided at five-minute intervals. The latitude arc is marked with 0 – 60 degrees latitude. Contained within a fitted red Morocco leather case, Diameter of dial 6.5 cm., 2½ in. The high quality of the materials and the high standard of engraving suggest that the instrument was made for a well-to-do person.
