About the Item
Set of 5 Antique French Bronze (Apothecary) Metric Weights with Original Wooden Block, Circa 1880
A handsome and authentic set of 19th-century French bronze metric weights, housed in their original carved hardwood block. This graduated set includes five cylindrical weights—1 kilogram, 500 grams, 200 grams, 100 grams, and 50 grams—each marked with its denomination and official verification stamps. Likely dating to the late 19th century, circa 1880–1900, these weights were used for precise commercial or apothecary measurement in shops, markets, or pharmacies.
The largest weight, 1 kilogram, measures 3" high by 2" in diameter, descending in size to the 50-gram weight at just 1.25" high. Each features a turned handle knob for easy lifting and a recessed threaded base, common in official trade weights of the era. The patina on each weight is consistent with age and use, exhibiting a rich, time-earned bronze coloration with visible wear and marks of calibration.
The original block is hand-carved from solid wood and measures 8" long x 4.5" high x 2.75" deep, with recessed wells to accommodate each weight. Its utilitarian form and weathered surface speak to its practical origins and authenticity.
This set is both a functional relic of the history of measurement and a sculptural decorative object—perfect for an industrial, academic, or apothecary-themed interior.
Condition: Excellent antique condition with age-appropriate wear. All weights are present and legible. Patina and wear consistent with use.
