About the Item

Land-surveyor squaring, measuring instrument made of brass, Italian manufacture, from the second half of the 19th century, complete with original walnut box. It is a topographic instrument consisting of a cylindrical brass box, on which eight sights are practiced, which are used to trace alignments at 45 ° or multiples of 45 °. The graduated square is used for the detection or formation on the ground of alignments at any angle. It consists of two coaxial metal cylinders of which the one below is fixed and is provided, on the upper edge, with a centesimal graduation; the upper cylinder, also called alidade, rotates around a vertical axis. The alidade is equipped with four sights or slots and on the lower edge it is equipped with a reading vernier which represents the indicator in the readings of the graduation of the fixed part.
