Globo terrestre realizzato nella seconda metà del XIX secolo da M. Vivien de Saint-Martin per Hachette & C.ie Paris. Oltre alla mappa territoriale sono raffigurate le correnti oceaniche. Base in legno tornito ed ebanizzato, completa del cerchio del meridiano in ottone inciso, sfera in cartapesta. Buono stato, qualche segno sulla carta e piccola mancanza sulla base. Altezza cm 48 inches 18.9, diametro sfera cm 22 – inches 8.8. Louis Vivien de Saint-Martin (1802 – 1896) è stato un cartografo, geografo e storico francese. Louis Vivien divenne noto per la pubblicazione della Carte électorale et administrative (1823) e dell’Atlas universel très complet (1825). Scrisse L’Année géographique tra il 1863 e il 1875 e si dedicò anche a tre opere monumentali, Histoire des découvertes géographiques, Nouveau dictionnaire de géographie universelle e Atlas universel de géographie. Fu inoltre uno dei fondatori della della Société de Géographie. Da sempre l’uomo ha desiderato conoscere il mondo in cui vive e ha utilizzato tutti i mezzi a disposizione per misurare lo spazio che lo circonda per ampliare sempre più le proprie conoscenze. Le condizioni che permisero all’uomo di elaborare modelli del mondo e dello spazio si realizzarono probabilmente soltanto dopo che il pensiero ebbe raggiunto uno sviluppo tale da comprendere che si potevano rappresentare, attraverso un modello, processi naturali.
