About the Item

Numbered No 25 and signed by J Duboscq a Paris. Louis Jules Duboscq was a French instrument maker, inventor and pioneering photographer. He was known in his time and is remembered today, for the high quality of his optical instruments, 1817- 1886. His work was shown with prominence at the Great Exhibition of 1851. Measures: Height 20 ins (51 cms), width 18 ins (46cms). This instrument was invented as a method of measuring the proportion of sugar in a solution. This is a crucial measurement for all types of spirit and wine production where the level of alcohol is important. This very grandly produced instrument was clearly intended as an object of prestige as well as use.
