About the Item

FREE SHIPPING to UK, EU and NYC (SEA) Front Door Standard An extremely elegant mahogany billiard table typical of Gillows craftsmanship circa 1820. Standing on slim reeded legs with rectangular plaques to conceal the frame bolts this table is a very rare six legged model and only a handful remain intact. The frame is veneered in a wonderful rich Cuban mahogany and features superb figuring, the restrained decoration of turned bosses to the cushions is in keeping with the sublime understated design. The timber is an extremely good cut with an impressive sub frame incorporating a myriad of bearers. Brass mounts along the side of the table cover the hand made bolts beneath, while the brass pocket plates retain hand made cotton nets. Gillows made very few billiard tables and only on commission to the landed gentry or aristocracy. Gillows of Lancaster and London was a prestigious British furniture-making company, founded in the 18th century. The company is renowned for producing fine, handcrafted furniture and is considered one of the most important names in British furniture history. Gillows was known for its exceptional craftsmanship, attention to detail, and use of high-quality materials, often specializing in bespoke, luxurious pieces for aristocratic and royal clients. Gillows made a wide range of furniture, including tables, chairs, cabinets, and more, often incorporating intricate carvings, marquetry, and other decorative elements. Their designs combined functionality with refined beauty, and their work was highly sought after, particularly by wealthy landowners and collectors of the time. The company’s long legacy continued into the 19th century, with pieces like billiard tables, cabinets, and seating that remain highly collectible today. Gillows furniture is considered a symbol of British elegance and quality, with many pieces still being appreciated and preserved for their craftsmanship and historical value. We also decided to take some images of the table partially set up just to illustrate the beauty of the sub frame, it is a work of art in itself.

English oak refers to a species of oak native to the British Isles, scientifically known as Quercus robur. It's highly valued for its durability, strength, and beautiful grain patterns. The wood has a light to medium brown colour, often with a slightly reddish or golden hue, and it darkens over time, developing a rich patina.
