English Oak Jockey Scale by Young & Son
By Young & Son
Located in New Orleans, LA
A charming relic of one of Britain's most popular sports, this English oak jockey scale by Young and Son of London was once used at the tracks to determine a jockey’s weight before and after a big race. This ensured that no one jockey was lighter than the regulation weight, since it would give him and his horse an advantage over their competitors. The scale retains its original brass weights, each of which represents a certain number of stones, the British unit of weight measurement. Upon examining them, it becomes clear that the weights do not actually weigh the number of stones they are marked with. They are uniquely designed weights that are made specifically for this scale. In other words, in order for the scale to show a proper jockey weight, it must have the original brass weights made for it. This scale works much the same as the traditional weight scales used...

Oak and Brass Jockey Scale by Young & Son
By Young & Son
Located in New Orleans, LA
This handsome English solid oak jockey scale retains its original upholstery and five brass weights by Young & Son. These beautiful scales were used at English tracks to determine the jockey’s weight before a big race. This was done to prevent any one jockey from being lighter than the rules regulate since it would give him and his horse the utmost advantage over their competitors. The scale works using brass weights that represent a certain number of stones, or the British unit of weight measurement, with each stone equaling 14 pounds. Upon examining them, it becomes clear that the weights do not actually weigh the number of stones they are marked with. They are uniquely designed weights that are made specifically for the particular scale for which they are used and simply represent the number of stones for which they are designated. In other words, in order for the scale to show a proper jockey weight, as is true with this example, it must have the original brass weights that were made for it. This scale works much the same as the traditional weight scales used...
