About the Item

This rare survivor of the F. A. O. Schwarz Toy Bazaar comes from an early period in the firm's history. The labeled horse (see photo 7) was produced before 1889. The company was founded in 1862 by Fredric August Otto Schwarz in conjunction with his brothers in Baltimore of that year. Other retail stores in Philadelphia and Boston soon followed them ultimately one in New York City in 1870. The initials of the funder F. A. O. was added to the company and its labels in 1889. This horse is made of wood covered in straw then burlap then covered in cow or horsehide. Its saddle and reins and tack are all leather while the bit and stirrups are metal. The horse has inset glass eyes and rests on a metal leaver which allows it to rock back and forth on the grain painted original 19th century stand. This amazing survivor of a privileged child's toy is in exceptional condition but still obviously having been played with enough to show wear and use expected for its age. Condition Disclosure: While we do our best to carefully inspect and give a full report on the condition of any item we sell, pointing out any repairs or alterations that may have been done to the best of our knowledge, as is the case with any antique and vintage item, there is a possibility that at some point in the life of the piece that there may have been damaged which has been professionally repaired and as such a repair undetectable it is therefore impossible for us to disclose... we recommend that you also read and agree to the 1st dibs user agreement, particularly sections 9,13,15,18,19 and 27
