About the Item

Arts & Crafts Bronze Seahorse Bookends, Attributed to E.T. Hurley, c.1920 Dimensions (each): 5.5" H × 5.5" W × 1.5" D Materials: Cast bronze with original verdigris patina Description A rare and finely cast pair of Arts & Crafts bronze bookends, each depicting a family of seahorses poised above an open book. The design features a large central seahorse flanked by two smaller companions, their tails forming elegant curls that echo marine waves. The figures rest on a stylized open volume—a witty pun on their function as book supports. The bronzes retain their original verdigris patina, showing a deep sea-green coloration with warm bronze highlights at the ridges and edges. The surfaces are untouched, presenting the honest depth and tonality collectors value. This model has long been associated with E.T. Hurley (American, 1869–1950), the Cincinnati Rookwood artist known for his etched ceramics and bronzes inspired by natural forms. While later reissued by Virginia Metalcrafters in the mid-20th century, early unmarked examples such as this pair are prized for their Arts & Crafts authenticity and crisp casting quality. Symbolism & Context The seahorse has been a maritime symbol since antiquity, representing patience, persistence, and guardianship of the sea. In the Arts & Crafts era, when natural motifs were celebrated for their beauty and symbolic meaning, this subject carried both decorative charm and deeper resonance. These bookends would have adorned a refined study or library, blending functionality with sculptural artistry. Condition Very good condition. No cracks or repairs. Original patina with minor rubs consistent with age and use.

Pair of Art Deco Gilt Iron WPA Style Foundry Men Bookends Signed NMF 1936 USA, 1936 A rare and striking pair of Art Deco gilt iron bookends, crafted in 1936 during the WPA era and American Deco period. These sculptural bookends are a fine example of the era's unique blend of Greco-Roman classical art with modern industrial design. Each bookend stands 10.5 inches high, 6.5 inches wide, and 2.75 inches deep, featuring a subtly detailed silhouette of a muscular, shirtless foundryman pouring molten metal into a crucible. The design captures the strength and dignity of the working man, a theme prevalent during the WPA period, which sought to honor and celebrate American labor through art. The gilt iron finish adds a touch of elegance and durability, ensuring these pieces are both functional and visually captivating. Each bookend is stamped with "NMF" on the left side and the date "1936" on the right, confirming their authenticity and historical significance. This rare pair of bookends is not only a functional accessory but also a piece of American history, reflecting the spirit of the 1930s.
