A FINE PAIR OF 12-INCH TERRESTRIAL AND CELESTIAL GLOBES Globes each 12 inch diameter; base height: 17 inches; base width: 17 1/2 inches. The terrestrial globe: A New and Correct/ GLOBE of ye EARTH/ together with a View of ye General and/ Coasting Trade Winds, Monsoons &c/ laid down according to ye Newest/ Discoveries from ye most Exact/ Obsevations/ By John Senex F.R.S/ Now made & sold with very Considerable/ Improvements By B.Martin in Fleet Street. The twelve hand-coloured engraved gores applied to a papier mache sphere. Many of the countries with coloured outlines, arrows indicate the trade winds and monsoons over the oceans. The latest discoveries are also included on the globe including Com. Anson's tract from Accapulco to T*** and Canton. With brass hour ring and pointed screw on to the graduated brass meridian ring, and horizontal ring printed with zodiac, calender scales and compass directions. The celestial globe: A New Celestial/ GLOBE/ Where on the STARS are Carefully/ laid down from the Correct/ Observations/ of Mr Hevelius, Dr Halley & Co, By Jn.o Senex F. R.S Now made and sold with very considerable/ Improvements By B. Martin/ in Fleet Street. Twelve hand-coloured engraved paper gores with finely coloured constellation figures. With graduated brass meridian ring and hour ring, and horizontal ring printed with zodiac, calender scales and compass directions. John Senex (fl. 1690-1740) cartographer and engraver worked in London since 1702. In 1728, Senex was made a Fellow of the Royal Society, and after this date added the abbreviation 'F.R.S.' after his name. After Senex's death James Ferguson acquired the Senex copper plates for the gores at auction in 1755. He amended them but unfortunately due to debts had to sell them. Around 1756 he sold the plates on to Benjamin Martin. Subsequent to Martin, Dudley Adams also published a new edition of Senex's globe.
