Ledoux and Coutaud, Pair of Dual-Leafed Mirrored Folding Screens, France, 1950s
About the Item
The designer (and owner) of these doors was Fernand Ledoux (1897-1993), a famous French actor directed by Jean Renoir, Marcel Carné, Jean Becker, Claude Chabrol, and Orson Welles among others.
Originally a 4-panel screen that has been split into two, these two two-panel screens were inspired by the tapestries of Lucien Coutaud. Ledoux owned the villa 'Les ramiers' in Villerville-sur-mer (Normandy) and lived next to Lucien Coutaud’s vacation cottage. Ledoux, who also painted in his spare time, was, in the creation of these doors, inspired by three of Lucien Coutaud's tapestries Orphée et les muses (1942), Le piano des villes (1943), and Harpe des eaux (1943), made for the Compagnie des Arts Français. These adorned the staircase leading to, and the bar of, and the salon at the Hotel George V in Paris.
Originally conceived as a four-panel screen.

Miguel Cisterna, Le Dinosaure, Large-scale Hand-embroidered Screen, France, 2014
By Miguel Cisterna
Located in New York, NY
Equally elegant and exotic, Miguel Cisterna’s works imbue the classical French tradition of fine embroidery with a modern sensibility. His hand sewn, labor intensive designs layer contrasting materials to create one-of-a-kind haute couture embroidered textiles. Raffia is wrought into shafts of wheat gently bending into the wind, insects crafted from wire and shell hover and crawl, floral designs sparkle with crystal embellishments, and the fragile elegance of humanity is made apparent through anatomical drawings...

This screen is a prime example of the influence of the Japanese taste that was so fashionable in Western Europe in the second half of the nineteenth century and served as a launching pad for skilled merchants, such as Siegfried Bing in Paris and more notably Arthur Lasenby Liberty...
