About the Item

Rare Napoleon III gilded wood four-leaf screen upholstered with on the one side a Striped vintage Madeleine Castaing fabric and and on the other side a Green linen velvet remembering the decoration of the hotel particulier of Hubert de Givenchy (Hotel d’Orrouer, Paris, France). This screen was a part of a former Parisian decor by Madeleine Castaing. Madeleine Castaing (1894–1992) was a French antiques dealer and interior designer of international renown. She was the friend and the sponsor of many artists, including Modigliani, Picasso, Jean Cocteau and Soutine, who made her portrait now kept at the Metropolitan Museum in New York. Original and whimsical, she revolutionized the world of decoration, creating the style Castaing which is now a reference. She was the mentor of Jacques Grange. Each panel : 55 x 140 cm (21,7 x 55,1 inches) Dimensions of the screen when unfolded: 220 x 140 cm (86,6 x 55,1 inches) Overall good estate (patina and minor defects due to the age of the screen, 19th century).
